Meowri

This piece was created, with the utmost respect to Māori people, to represent the importance of circles within Māori culture. Circles symbolize nature, healing, thinking and knowledge. Māori describe the circular views of binoculars and how they look deeper and focus on a third circle created by the lenses.

The circular system describes a way of thinking, as opposed to the square system considered the global governance system. For the systems to work harmoniously, there is a need to recognize the square to see the circle.

Some circles in this piece overlap while others are fractured, both creating another view in keeping with the importance of the third circle. The circles are encased in squares and appear somewhat structured. The two pieces in the upper-left corner are the exception. Using the same black-and-white fabric for the square background of the leftmost piece as the partial-circle foreground of the adjacent piece reflects how harmoniously square and circular systems can work under the right conditions.
